Optimisation of a V070
Each time we start a V070 design cycle we need to understand the conditionings imposed by the latest rules and course, define the tools that we are going to use to achieve our goals and perform the design process with those goals, conditions and tools in mind . In this article we are going to describe what we did in each of these steps for this 201 1-12 edition from the perspective of the hydrodynamic optimisation of the V0 70s. We will conclude with a brief look at the future of the class. Conditions and criteria When the rules and format of the current race were published we identified three critical changes that would have to be addressed with design features.
These were the reduction of sails allowed onboard, the route through the Middle East and banning stacking aft of the aft watertight bulkhead. The consequences of applying these changes to the design are substantial. The limit of having only three downwind sails onboard, of which one has to be fractional, meant one sail from the old inventory had to go.
Assuming the fractional is the Fractional Code Zero and that you need a Masthead Code Zero, then the decision is whether to carry a VMG or a reaching gennaker. Carrying a VMG gennaker implies that the boat will have to sail deeper angles with less heel while a reaching gennaker forces you to sail no lower the 135-140° TWA and with more heel.
